New Roof and Solar Power Generation for 2011 |
The next big project at the hall will be replacement of the roof. The existing roof covering is Hardrow which has a 30 year life span. We are working towards re-roofing in slate and we have had some quotes. The cost will be around £14,000 and we have secured grants of £10,050. Also there is the possibility of installing a solar PV array to generate electricity and earn a good income for the hall via the FIT for the next 25 years. There is a big capital cost for this (up to £14,000)and more grants are being sought. The installation of this system would help us to maintain low rental charges for community use and support the long term financial security of the hall.

£10,050 Grants awarded for the roof:
Hadfied Trust : £2000 The Frieda Scott Trust : £3500, Councillor Bingham (CCC): £2000
Cumbria Community Foundation : £1750 South Westmorland Neighbourhood Forum: £800
|
We have secured sufficient grant aid for the new roof and this work is now in progress. |
| Sadly we did not win any grant aid from Energyshare, but a lottery grant application has been submitted for the solar panels. The recent change in the FIT scheme would impact the income from solar panels, but they would still provide a welcome income. |
On 22nd July 2009 we were awarded a grant of £600 by Kent Estuary Neighbourhood Forum towards the cost of insulating the hall. The forum is part of Cumbria County Council and supports local community groups in many ways including meeting in local buildings such as village halls. It is definately worth attending a meeting which will have a number of interesting speakers on local issues. We would like to thank the staff for their help with the grant application process and the forum for deciding to support our project. http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/neighbourhoodforums/forums/south-lakeland/kent |
| On 11th September 2009 we obtained approval for our grant application to the Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust. We have now had an energy audit as required and electrical work has started. A full upgrade of the insulation will follow. The grant for £5800 depended on the Neighbourhood forum grant being awarded. Once again we had a lot of help from the staff administering the grants and we would like to them for their help with the grant application process. |
On 9th December 2009, the Big Lottery Fund announced that we had been awarded £9000 for the hall modernisation project. This has paid most of the bill for the new windows and doors, supplied and fitted by Andersons.
Andersons have done a great job for us and I'm sure you will agree the new doors and windows are very smart and make a tremendous difference to the look and feel of the hall.
The balance of the cost for all this work comes from money raised at the annual fell race and country fair held at the end of May each year. |
 |
| December 2010: Loft insulation, underfloor insulation and electrical improvements are now complete and the hall is much more comfortable to use and we hope to see a marked reduction in heating bills. This will also boost the usage of the hall, especially in the winter months. |
